Time

Finding the time these days to sit and upload pictures and posts updates is impossible.   It has been a great summer and I guess enjoying the moments with Sweetheart took priority over this little hobby of mine...as they should. 

I have been working on a few projects here and there.   One of my favorite ones is the DVD library we created in the mini hallway:

I have started collecting paint samples.  This has been the bane of my existence.  I've actually been working on this since January.  It's so hard to find the right color.   To add to that, the rooms I want to paint have high ceilings and I have to primer the walls before the paint and that's just too much for me to take on.  BUT, Sweetheart agreed to hire someone to come in and paint so I'm working on that this week!   In the meantime, I have spots of paint all over the walls in the kitchen, dining area and living room.   True story. 

Oh that reminds me of another unfinished project.  This cute end table that I took from the bedroom to keep in the living room.   It sits right beside the back door.  I wanted to house patio items that shouldn't be outside in the heat and extra blankets.  I want to paint it and replace the hardware.

And it's that time again!  We have our first preseason game on Saturday so I'm pretty sure that my unfinished projects will take a back seat to this:

My goal is to have everything finished by December.  Wish me luck!

Makeover

Is it just me that is constantly wondering where the times goes?  I mean, time seems to just fly by in just the blink of an eye.   Last time I was here, I was getting for Christmas.   Now, it's spring and I'm getting ready for Easter.   Speaking of Christmas, we had a wonderful Christmas season.   I am always so grateful that I am able to spend the holidays with my family in Tucson.   Sweetheart is such a good sport about the constant travel to Tucson during the holidays.  There is a LOT of travel during October, November and December and I am so grateful that he's so supportive during what could easily be a very stressful time.   Dividing holidays between his family that lives in Phoenix and my family that lives in Tucson can get complicated.   But we always manage to iron out kinks and make it work.   

This is a picture that I took the first day of the season that I was able to wear boots because I was so excited!  I wait all year long for boot season.  In Arizona, boot season starts late and ends early.  It's a very short window and one must take full advantage of it.   It was some time around Thanksgiving that the weather was cool enough to wear boots -- see the pilgrim figurines on the table?   Yep, late November.  And do you notice that it wasn't tights with boots weather.   Tights and boots weather has an even smaller window than just boots.   It just doesn't get that cold here.    It's such a shame too because I've got some cute boots with tights outfits.  I'm just saying.......

Anyway, my post today isn't about my boots but about my new project.   I finally got Sweetheart to co-sign on the living room makeover.  For the last year or so I have wanted to repaint the living room, kitchen and dining room.  It' really all one big room so if I paint one, I must paint the rest.  

After we took the tree down in January, I did my annual deep clean.  I moved all the furniture to the middle of the room and vacuumed, cleaned walls, blinds and windows.   I love cleaning just about as much as I love boots.  True story.   

The look on Sweetheart's face never gets old when he walks in to find the living room in a jumbled mess:

I took down all the drapes too so that I could have them dry cleaned:

When I was done, everything looked so clean and fresh.  If it could only stay that way forever....

My house remains in this state as of today.   I plan on buying new drapes so I didn't hang the old ones back up.   I also plan on new pillows for the couch so I didn't put those back out either.  All the pictures and decorations are still in boxes.  I won't put anything out until the paint is on the walls:

On and see that unit sitting by the back door?  I took it from the bedroom and I plan to have it house the extra DVD's that are sitting on the media center.  I am going to paint it because I simply loathe that knotty pine color.    You should have seen the look on Sweetheart's face when I asked him to move it out into the living room for me.   He's all "did you say the living room????".

I am currently trying to find the right shade of grey for the walls.  I want a pale grey with navy accents.   It's a bit intimidating but fun at the same time.   We've had the dark color on the wall for the past eight years.  It's time for a new, lighter color.  It's time for a makeover.

Deck the Halls

Just a little Christmas cheer to share with you.  I started pulling all my Christmas decor out the weekend after Thanksgiving.  It's been a wonderful season -- full of love, joy and family.  I spent more time doing things with Sweetheart and less time crafting and baking this year.  But no complaints, I loved it.

By the way, I warned you about my obsession with making runners in my Thanksgiving post did I not?   I chose a bright red burlap for Christmas.   It's lovely.

The room feels warm and toasty (even though it's only in the 60's in the evenings and we have yet to turn the heater on):  

p.s.  those are fake presents; I wrapped empty boxes so the tree wouldn't look so lonely.  True story.

I know what you're thinking...is that water in her wine glass???  Why, yes it is.  I like to drink water out of a wine glass.  That's how I roll.

It seems I forgot to take full pictures of my runners.  But I am certain you get the gist of what the runners look like by now.

Christmas Cards 2014

I started these cards last week and finished them on Friday.   It was tedious work but it was worth it; I think the cards look great! 

First, I cut all the trees using my Cricut cutting machine:

I made 25 cards.  This year I had to glue each round dot on the tree so they look like ornaments:

Once all the trees were decorated, I had to cut ribbon and then glue the ribbon to the card:

It's not even an organized mess, it's just a mess:

When I finish assembly of the cards, I then stamp them and lay them out to dry:

Now, on to the next task.  I'm actually almost finished with this part.  Just a few more finishing touches.

He called it a birthday train....

That's what Sweetheart called it.  It started the Saturday before my birthday and ended with a victorious Cardinal's football game and sushi on the Sunday following my birthday.   In between there were treats and concerts and surprise visits from my niece and cleverly hidden presents.  And sadly, even an end to a close relationship that spanned decades.

Here's a quick view of the week through the lens of my iPhone:

5.  A new Kate Spade handbag and wallet (with gift cards!):

He actually bought this for me back in October 

and I've been patiently waiting to pull it out of the bag...

6.  Some new gloves and socks in a cute package with a keep calm sticker (my fav):

7.  On my actual birthday, Sweetheart took the day off with me so we could spend the day together.  We went to Tempe Town Lake and took a boat cruise around the lake.  Sweetheart at the helm:

He insisted we address him as Captain Miguel...just kidding.

My niece drove up to Phoenix with my great niece to surprise me on my birthday!  What a treat!!  She is the most darling little girl EVER.  Yes, EVER!  After the lake we had lunch then jumped on the light rail to downtown Phoenix.  

I feel so fortunate to have such wonderful friends and family.   My day was so great.  And I feel especially blessed to have Sweetheart in my life; he makes me feel special every day but on my my birthday (and birthday week) he made me feel incredibly special!

It was a wonderful week!

Week 9 - Slow Cooker Italian Beef Sandwiches

I found this great recipe for slow cooker Italian Beef sandwiches on Pinterest here.      Instead of adding beer as the recipe calls for, I doubled the beef broth.

Sometimes I think I impress Sweetheart when I have Pinterest-inspired, recipe success.   I generally show him a picture of what I am planning to make for our Sunday football grub the day before as I'm planning my grocery list.   He will eat anything that I make so I never fear making something he won't like.  And he's always grateful that I spend time planning and cooking.  But sometimes he sees a meal on the plate and says "wow, that looks good" or "wow, that smells good" as it's cooking in the slow cooker.   Makes me giggle a little.  When he says "this is delicious!" between bites, well let's just say that makes me very happy.   That's Pinterest-inspired, recipe success at it's best!

I am often amazed at how simple it is to create a very tasty meal with very minimal prep and kitchen time.  This one was super easy because I just threw all the ingredients in the slow cooker, set the timer and went about my day.   I cooked it on high for 6 hours.   Prep time afterwards was next to nothing.   I toasted some wheat rolls, piled in the meat and provolone cheese, poured the au jus in a small ramekin and put some chips on a plate.   I topped the sandwich with pepperchini peppers.

This is one I will definitely make again!

Speaking of Pinterest,  l ran across a picture of hash brown cooked in the waffle iron one day.   Sweetheart and I both love a crispy hash brown so I tired it.  It was so simple.  I brushed on some melted butter to both sides of the waffle iron, added some shredded potatoes that I seasoned with salt, pepper and garlic.   I poured the potatoes into the waffle iron and let them cook for 10 minutes.  

This was the end result:

The BEST hash browns I've made and easily clean up!


BTW,  November is my birthday month and Sweetheart let me open one of my gifts.  It's the Kate Spade lenticular eyes iPhone 6 case.     Cute, yes?

Fall in Arizona

It was 72 degrees in Phoenix on Sunday.   I'll repeat that in case you didn't catch that.  It was 72 degrees in Phoenix on Sunday!   Enduring what seems like endless months of very hot weather almost seems worth it when the temperatures drop into the 70's in Arizona.   Sunny skies and a cool 72 degree breeze is nothing other than paradise.  

It was a perfect time to pull out my Thanksgiving decor.   I always start with the front door:

I love airing out the house when the temperatures drop.   After a long summer of doors and windows closed and the A/C running, it's nice to be able to turn off the A/C and open all doors and windows and let the fresh air in.  The fresh, cool air flowing through the house inspired my warm holiday decor. 

I started by making another burlap runner for the entrance table.  I chose a cream colored burlap from Hobby Lobby to add some lightness to the dark table.  I'm warning you right now, I'm 99.9% sure I'll be making another burlap runner for Christmas, Spring, Easter, etc.   I kind of heart burlap runners right now.

The light table runner and orange pumpkins started the simple and basic palette that I carried throughout the house:

I made a runner for the coffee table in the family room and added some pine cones and orange pumpkins to a rectangular basket:

I've always been partial to neutral colors so being able to use these soft, pale colors just warms my heart.  See what I just did there?   I bought some plain burlap pillow covers from Hobby Lobby and added some embellishments to give the pillows a little flare:

I contemplated added more embellishments to the pillows but decided to leave well enough alone.   See Grievous and Sweetheart's foot in the corner of the picture?  They were taking a nap while I was attempting to snap pictures.   All the commotion didn't seem to bug either one of them because they didn't budge.     

I added two orange pumpkins to the shelf in the family room and some beaded garland to the candles:

Simple and warm:

I usually put out all of my pilgrims (I have quite a few) but this year I decided to give them a break.  Although I did sneak this Mr & Mrs Pilgrim to the shelf in the hallway:

And while I was making runners for the entrance way and the family room I decided why not for the table as well?  I'm loving the cream color on the dark wood:

A simple blend of white pumpkins, pine cones and a few glittered pumpkins in a leaf-shaped bowl is perfect for a centerpiece:

I've had this wrought iron pumpkin for over 15 years.   I bought it at an after Thanksgiving day sale at Cracker Barrel's general store.   I added some beaded garland and a cream colored candle:

I added Thanksgiving subway art to the shelf on the kitchen along with some mini pumpkins and called it good: 

Does an owl speak Thanksgiving to you?   It does me, so I added one to the end table:

This is one of my all time favorite Target clearance finds.   I love the way the gold shimmers when the tea light is lit:

Yep, Christmas plans are in full force.   Christmas holiday projects, Christmas cards, Christmas shopping, family time, etc.    It's my favorite time of the year!
